Education certainly exhibits the quality of an individual’s life. It is the vital factor that shapes an individual and pushes their future in the right direction. With the advancement in technologies, every person can avail access to education irrespective of conditions. Now, it has become easier for people to sit at home and educate themselves. This has become possible with new education technology, Distance Learning Education. All schools including schools in Sharjah have started offering this education to their students.

Distance Learning Education is a system of learning that is conducted through electronic communication. It enables students to access the learning within their own space and time without marking their presence physically in school. This is the perfect and reliable substitute for traditional learning. This is the most convenient method as it offers flexibility to manage your timetable as per your schedule. In order to avail education, students don’t need to quit their job or responsibilities. They can work and lean hand in hand with Distance Learning Education system. Also, the enrolled applicants have the authority to choose from a comprehensive assortment of tailor-made programs that suits their aptitudes. With these features, it has become a favourable method to impart education. Countries like Sharjah private schools are using this technology to impart education.

Technology has been rapidly advancing and enabling the learners to overcome the traditional method of learning and teaching process. In distance education, technology acts as a vehicle through which the course is conducted and taught. The quality is ensured through new communication and updated technologies methods. These technologies aid learners with innovative techniques to acquire course-related information. The familiar educational resources are combined with varied information and communication technologies. The list of schools in Sharjah are offering their students with this is small and streamlined.

The key to a successful online classroom is not the technology but how it is utilised. It is necessary to cover all the aspects ranging from what type of information is communicated using the technologies. There are many types of technologies that allow easily to deliver information to students. The technologies are as follows:

1. Video conference
Under this technology, the instructor and learner are connected through two-way communication. A real-time discussion takes place where both the persons can see and speak with each other.

2. Multimedia
The materials related to courses are available in the form of CDs, DVDs, audio files and other types of stored media. These materials are designed keeping in mind the features like flexible, modular, and self-paced.

3. Print
Students have access to all textbooks, notes and other material in the form of printouts. They are sent to students via mail. All assignments, exams or tests are held within the decided timeframe.

4. Online
Web-based course and materials are delivered to students over the internet. There are many courseware management systems like Blackboard, D2L, etc, that assist in organizing content, activities, initiates communication and assessment activities.

5. Teleconferencing
In this, students and instructors connect with each other through telecommunication technology. Various communications technology like satellites, microwave and ITFS are brought into action to conduct teleconferencing.

6. Audioconferencing
The common and least expensive form of technology incorporated with audio samples. It makes use of computer or facsimile technology to transmit visual to support the audio. These audio graphics systems are good as it involves a lot of illustrations.

All the aforementioned are technologies that help the students pursue distance courses easily. When students are selecting technology for their course completion from CBSE schools in Sharjah, they must look after available instructional technologies. They should also examine the learning outcomes, discern learning experience and look that they match to the available technologies. For effective online classrooms, educators and learners must opt new skills periodically to make the learning stronger.

Is Sleep Deprivation Becoming Common Amongst Students?

blog
Is Sleep Deprivation Becoming Common Amongst Students?

Science deems age-appropriate good night sleep ensures a fresh and healthy mind, improved physical health & cognitive skills, and above all a risen self-esteem. Researches do indicate that rested children contract fewer infections because restorative sleep strengthens the immune system.

Working in an India International School Sharjah, allows me to observe students ranging from ages 5 – 18, and children deprived of sleep can be easily spotted. Insufficient night’s sleep displays obvious signs of daytime sleepiness, inattention, inability to concentrate in class work and frequent school tardiness and/or absenteeism. Students who sleep less are more likely to be non-compliant and over-reactive. They appear withdrawn and anxious. Children, when getting less amount of sleep to become grouchy and at times act without thinking. They show impulse control issues and hence, in adolescents, students may display an increase in risk-taking behaviors.

Not getting enough sleep affects every aspect of a child’s well-being and functioning.

The whys and wherefores for this phenomenon could be varied, stretching from

parents’ long working hours to being glued to the gadgets.

Children are being raised in nuclear families wherein both the working parents try to catch up with the day’s chores until late night resulting in a disturbed sleeping routine.

Discipline, apt scheduling of time and learning to prioritize are the keys to follow every routine in time. Children are wet clay! It is important to inculcate good habits in them as early as possible. At the onset of puberty, physiological and social changes in children may disrupt their night sleep.

Throwing light on today’s generation, students from a young age are ‘online virtually and offline physically’. Their cup of milk is their device and smart phones are extensions of them! On average, children and adolescents spend 5 hours a day engaged on media for personal, entertainment or academic reasons. Late evening use of electronics, high level of visual & cognitive stimulation from internet surfing and texting negatively impact children’s sleep.

Additionally, academic stressors and family discord may not enforce set consistent bedtime rules.

Getting a child to go to bed is not always an easy task. Child care plan for sleep deprivation should include the entire family. Children and parents will benefit from techniques and lifestyle changes to address limit-setting problems, family dynamics of strain and busy parental work schedules. Creating hygienic and sleep conducive environment is important! Bedtime routines to be strictly laid down and followed by all family members. Introduce a wind-down time at night that involves calming activities, such as a shower and time to read a book.

Keep children away from aerated drinks and sugary food, especially after evening. Avoid high-energy activities three hours before bedtime. Strictly use the bedrooms for sleeping and not for communicating with friends, watching TV or eating. No cellphones, computers, etc. to be allowed in bedrooms. Encourage children to fall asleep independently.

During the health education or well-being classes, the schools should also educate the students and other stakeholders about the importance of adequate sleep. School meal plans should encourage more of fresh fruits and salads and reduce sugar containing foods. Our Sharjah Indian School has conducted many such programs/events to teach kids how to take care of themselves. A good night sleep is essential to improve students’ performance while promoting long-term health and safety!

I have Got 2030 Vision- ASPAM IIS

ASPAM IIS is charged up with a mission to deliver inclusive and quality education for a new decade.

As a facilitator when I went to the US with my vision of doing something for society, I understood that education is the source of society as it passes from one generation to another. The main goal was to know more about the SDG goals and how those 17 targets ranging from healthcare and education to the environment will provide inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030.

As educators, we need to invest more in our missions and visions. And we need to embrace innovation and set new standards that can harness the best of data and information to deliver change while protecting the privacy of children. All of this will require us to be more transparent, accountable and collaborative – and redirect more energy and resources from talk to action.

With 10 years to achieve this ambition, the challenge could not be greater. On current trends, one out of every two young people will be left behind by the end of the decade, lacking even the most basic skills needed to join the workforce.

My Question has always Been Are Schools and Teachers Ready?

At one of the Schools in Sharjah, we know that investments in early childhood education can be a great equalizer in society –Likewise, once young people leave education systems, we need to make sure they have the relevant skills for the workforce. Investing in these bookends of the educational process will greatly reduce not having proper skills for the new decade.

Like their students, teachers will need to be prepared to work in rapidly changing and unpredictable environments where knowledge is built from many different sources and perspectives. The traditional roles for teachers operating in a conservative environment of content-focused curricula, with them as controllers of information are already inappropriate.

Students, through television, the Internet and the opportunities for interacting in an increasingly diverse community are learning, and learning effectively, well beyond the classroom. The teacher must evolve into a new facilitative professional. It may be that ‘evolution’ is too slow a process, such that a‘re-invention’ of the front-line professionals – teachers and administrators – may be more appropriate. Traditional responsibilities will change for these new professional

To start the ten-year countdown to 2030, the scale of the global education crisis is so large that everyone has a role to play. We have become a much stronger sector because of a sense of inclusion – from people with physical disabilities to learning needs and other challenges. And it’s time to practice in the workplace and support what we say is important in the classroom: including everyone.

We know how to get every child into school and learning. What happens next – we know how some countries are making rapid progress: a focus on performance, inclusion and innovation were the key ingredients to accelerating progress.

As being part of the education system we need to create our own early warning system. Don’t expect others to spot trends, or to recognize threats and opportunities for you. Instead, we must all get better at looking, thinking and acting ahead of the curve. I call this process managing the future, as it combines the tools of technology, forward-thinking, competitive intelligence, strategic thinking, and scenario planning.

We need to think like a futurist so that our students think systematically and explore predictions and possibilities about the future and how they can emerge from the present.

We need to see that they have sufficient skills to manage the future proactively, ponder how the trends interrelate, and focus on recognizing patterns. How they can “connect the dots,” and make connections between bits of information requires that you hit “refresh” and maintain an open mind as you consume information. Challenge your own assumptions about where emerging trends are headed, and the implications broadly, and on how you and your organization might best respond. They need to understand that “The best way to predict the future is to invent the future.”

Every action you take today shapes the future tomorrow. We must be purposeful in realizing that our individual actions – and time perceptions – create the future. This “spot a change, create a response” mindset will become the touchstone of innovation for the vast majority of individuals over the coming decade.

The biggest challenge over the next ten years will not be “the future,” but how you navigate your future, and the steps you take to remain relevant.

But as we enter this new countdown, as an educationalist, we need to take decisive and transformative action – otherwise the likelihood of progress will rapidly diminish.

Our one of the Best Schools in Sharjah believes that this is our opportunity to be bold and unlock big change that the next generation needs. We need to be “Schools of Future”.

How can the Genius Hour Help Students in Classrooms?

blog
How can the Genius Hour Help Students in Classrooms?

Albert Einstein once said, “Every child is born a genius.” The main reason why most people do not function at genius levels is that they are not aware of how creative and smart they really are.

Let’s call it the “Schwarzenegger effect.” No one would look at a person such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and think how lucky he is to have been born with such tremendous muscles. Everyone knows that he, and people like him, have worked many thousands of hours to build up their bodies so they can compete and win in bodybuilding competitions. Your creative capabilities are just the same. They actually grow in strength as they are used.

But, the difference is that you don’t need to spend thousands of hours to increase your creative thinking abilities. By practicing a few simple exercises and applications, you can start your creative juices flowing, and you may even amaze yourself at the quality and quantity of good ideas you come up with. ASPAM IIS, the best Sharjah Indian School, organize several activities for students to empower their creative thinking skills.

Creative genius never shows in children because they are normally forced to do things they do not like or follow subjects they do not have the passion for. This happens because all major education systems offer standardised education patterns rather than having the syllabus customised to the interests of each and every child. Syllabus conflicts with Creativity here, since all children are born different, with different capacities and skillsets. Even in the case of twins, each twin is completely different to the other.

Hence, to create exceptional children filled with creativity & innovation, schools must combine the Standard education with custom systems which enable the child to discover their natural spark and talent and exercise them until they reach Genius levels.

This is where the Genius Hour comes in. Genius Hour consists of giving a child the complete space and freedom to follow and execute whatever the child likes to do in the class in a given time. For example, the child is given, say, one period a day to peruse his/her passion , be it drawing, writing, singing or working on subject wise Enquiry based projects based on their interest levels. The progress levels and readiness should be monitored by the teachers and the parents and the necessary motivation must be given until the child starts to exhibit exceptional creativity levels. This will in turn, help the children improve on the other regular school work as well.

This system has been tried and tested in organizations like Google. In fact, Google originated the idea called 20% time, where employees were allowed to spend 20% of their work time and work resources on any field of interest, different from their line of work. It is a well-known story that most of the innovations brought about by Google, like, Gmail, AdSense, Android and Maps are a result of this system.

“Human resources are like natural resources; they’re often buried deep. You have to go looking for them, they’re not just lying around on the surface. You have to create the circumstances where they show themselves.”  – Sir Ken Robinson

During my tenure as a teacher at one of the best Indian Schools in Sharjah, I have always strived to encourage children to follow their passions and create situations where their innovative talents shine. The key to a successful education is to measure the intelligence and creativity levels in the children when they join school, and then create conditions where these levels are gradually increased over time and brought to Genius Levels.

Passionate teachers along with creativity enhancing techniques like the Genius Hour, are what the current education system needs to generate and nurture creative geniuses of the next decade, who will catapult UAE into the Top 10 Brain Banks on this planet.
